You know you're living well into the 21st Century when you're using an app like iKandl. Created by Brothers Technology LLC, iKandl is a new social networking birthday app for the iPhone and iPad. Far beyond the typical social networking reminders that alert you that someone's birthday is coming up, iKandl allows you to choose from several delicious looking cupcakes, send personalized greetings... and actually lets blow out the candle!

The flame on the candle can be manipulated by either blowing on, touching, or dragging your finger on the screen of an iPhone or iPad. Not that you'd actually want to touch a flame in real life, but the realism makes for a very entertaining and personal experience. Greetings are sent via email. The app can be downloaded for free straight from iTunes.

For an additional $2.99 (which is less than the price of some actual greeting cards, which we all throw away at some point), you can upgrade the app to include iKandl messenger which allows you to create and send an unlimited number of messages using its voice recording function (iKandl voice recorder).

The upgrade also comes with a calendar which can pull birthday information from your Facebook account or contact list, and ensure that you make everyone in your world feel special. The latest version 1.3 offers multi-language support and an icon based interface. iKandl gets a coolness factor of 10. We can't imagine someone not saying "aww" if they received one of these. It definitely is the thought that counts.

The only gripe with this app is that you can't eat the cupcake. Then again, we don't think eating your iPhone (or yikes, iPad!) is a good idea.
