Central Scoop iPhone/iPad App Review

So you live in NYC and your commute surrounds Grand Central Terminal like it does for nearly half the population of New York (roughly 4 1/2 million). Wouldn't it be convenient to know what times the trains arrive and depart as you dash out of the office? How about updates on delays, information about what is happening on some of the trains the use the station everyday?

Whether you are a business man or a hipster, the minimalist design of Central Scoop will be used regularly on your iOS device. This is a simple app with a simple interface which does several things. The main screen shows Grand Central departures. It regularly downloads timetables, so you want to make sure you have a secure connection. Quick observation will show train routes like those to Stamford and New Haven. Information included in these displays include platform departure (i.e. Platform 24), and the first stop the train will make when it leaves the station (i.e., the first stop on the Croton-Harmon line on the display we're looking at is "Yankees-E153rd St 1st Stop".

The coolest part of this app however is what makes "scoop" a part of the title. If you create an account with Central Scoop, you can create "twitter-like" updates which everyone and anyone can read. Pressing the "All Scoops" icon will reveal conversations typically about stuff that is either happening with trains or stations (i.e. late arrivals), or random conversation about things happening on one of the trains. One funny comment we came across was "there should be a singles only car on this line. all the guys seem married here". This makes for a great way to pass time. I can totally see professionals checking in for a laugh.

The app is .99. There are no ads to be found. While very simple, if you rely on Grand Central Station and don't want to be bothered with the clutter found in most transit apps, then this would be a great buy. It is definitely worth checking out.
