It is back to school season in the states and so what better time than now for a history lesson. Seventy Five years ago, the Nazis invaded Poland ushering in World War II sending the entire world into global conflict. The war would ravage on for almost a decade gutting economies and accruing millions of casualties along the way. After years of development, Enemy Dawn by Simplus Technologies will let you experience firsthand the amount of strategy required to win that war through five intense battle scenes. Without trivializing the casualties of the war and its effect on subsequent events both from a moral and political standpoint, Enemy Dawn will make you understand the meaning of the word challenge.
Game Play
Enemy Dawn consists of several battle scenes. Subsequent levels can only be reached if previous ones are unlocked. You are given several forms of artillery. In the beginning, your tank lands in the middle of an urban war zone filled with planes shooting rockets and enemy tanks. Your tank has a long range gun that can be maneuvered and aimed by swiping on the right side of the screen. To shoot, you have to press the left side of the screen. We tapped the actual tank to shoot. To move left and right you have to tilt your device. Got that? This means that this game is truly hands-on in every sense of the word. You have to manipulate your device with both hands and keep your eyes on the screen at all times.
Fighting Is intense. In addition to paying attention to enemy fire, you have a limited amount of ammo. You start off with eight rounds which can be used up quickly if you get careless. Thankfully, airlifts frequently bring in replenishment along with other supplies. Make it a point to acquire these and watch out for Red Cross trucks. Some planes crash in like Kamikazes. All while paying attention to and avoiding enemy fire, you need to fire into those as well otherwise its curtains. It is very, very easy to die in the game. It took us several plays before we made any significant progress, hence us making clear that the game is a challenge.
Verdict
With excellent graphics, a stunning intro reminiscent of the propaganda cartoons of the 1930s and 40s, the forcing of lots of multitasking and great incentives, the frustration and concentration required will keep you coming back. We all know how World War II played out. Enemy Dawn expects you to repeat the sequence of events by winning some important battles. The game is rated 12+ for fantasy violence and clocks in at 99 cents. With the absence of ads, this is hardly something to complain about. It is picking up great ratings online and we can see why.
