Abode vice president and general manager Danny Winokur released a blog post on November 9, 2011 stating that Adobe would stop development of its Flash Player for mobile browsers so that it can focus on HTML5. Winokur stated that, “HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.” Winokur also states that Adobe is excited to be a part of the mobile HTML community along with “Google, Apple, Microsoft, and RIM.”

Mobile app and desktop Flash developers need not worry though, Adobe has you covered. Adobe will now allow mobile app developers to package their native apps with Adobe AIR for use in app stores. Adobe will also support the desktop version of Flash for advanced gaming and premium video. They will also be support Flash on current mobile devices with bug fixes and security updates, but will no longer be releasing new versions. Source codes licensees will still be allowed to continue working on Flash Player for mobile browsers if they desire to.

Adobe is also designing features in Flash that promise a smooth transition to HTML5. The company is excited for the future of mobile, and who can blame them? It’s a rapidly changing ecosystem full of new ideas. Will Adobe regain lost trust in the mobile market? Only time will tell.
