Big Bing Changes On Windows Phone 8

News

Aug 6th 2013 at 12:42pm by GiveMeApps

Some major changes are coming to your Windows Phone 8 device to the tune of Bing. According to the Windows Phone blog, within a few weeks the following changes will take place.

Streamlined Search Categories

At the moment, flicking to either side after tapping 'search' reveals several categories: Web, Local, Media and Shopping. Do to infrequent use, those will be cut down to Web, Images and Videos. This is close to their desktop search engine (well at least the first three choices). Bing Product Managers mention that this streamlining will help avoid confusion and help people find what they're looking for more easily.

The web search will load images, and local results and have them combined within, leaving for less swiping. Also, richer search results are to be expected. Searching for an item will not only bring up the item, but related items. If you searched for Delta Airlines, the site would be displayed first, along with links within the site, making again for less taps. The whole idea is to get the most relevant and useful information on your first search screen

Images & Video

The Bing update brings endless scrolling. Forget pagination. There will also be larger image thumbnails.

Save On Data

Bing product manager Alisher Saydalikhodjayev says that to save on data, only results for the default web will show up. Images, Videos and other items will have to be swiped over to be retrieved  This streamlining helps you save on data. Since most major carriers charge based on data nowadays, this tweak is essential. Currently, results for the four search categories discussed previously all load.

There's a lot more also. For more information, check out the Windows Phone 8 Blog
