Facebook And Its New Face

Facebook has released a host of new updates this week, some of which include streamlining the UI with real time updates using a twitter-like feed, and tighter integration with apps to share real time data.

If you've been surfing the web over the last few months or so, it's hard not to come across sites that allow you to sign up using your Facebook ID to bypass traditional registrations which can be time-consuming. The usage of your information however means that if the sites in question share real-time information, all of a sudden your Facebook friends can be presented with the over-sharing of your info (i.e. clogged news feeds).

Imagine if your friend was alerted every time you shared a photo on Flickr. How about seeing every song you listened to on your favorite Music Sharing service. What if you are one of the guys, and didn't want your friend to know about your interest in baby Koala Bears in Australia? How about everyone knowing every time you viewed an article any website? Well, all of this real time sharing means data for advertisers to collect, more ways to share information with your friends, or more ways of annoying everyone you know. Like any social network, anything you post, no matter the privacy level, becomes public in some way. Every update that is released on these networks allows the powers that be to learn more about you and your habits.
Facebook Is Constantly Being Updated With New Features
Great examples would include Hulu, whose new Facebook integration means that users can share what they've watched, read, viewed and listened. There is also competitor Netflix, who is in a bind with their rival app, due to a 1988 US law which places a cap on how much users can share about their video viewing and rental history.

As told by Facebook executives, these recent updates are only the beginning. The public so far has a mixed response. Only time will tell whether these features will cause harm or do good. Meanwhile, competitor Google+ is quietly gaining momentum in the background. Exciting times indeed.
