Announced February 2011 by NVIDIA, Project Kal-El is a chip that would make even Superman jealous. The Tegra 3 or, Kal-El is a quad-core processing powerhouse that promises to power through your high performance tasks like a locomotive. It’s not without its little secret though, just like the Man of Steel. Kal-El reverts to a single-core processor when it’s not conducting demanding tasks. Yes, it’s a quad-core processor with a fifth core specifically reserved for power saving functions when reading, listening to music, or watching video. As your work load increases, “Kal-El disables its companion core and turns on its four performance cores, one at a time, as the work load increases” (Matt Wuebbling, NVIDIA Blog ).

There’s no doubt that those cores will be kicking, though. Kal-El promises to punch through high demanding tasks such as picture and video editing without even breaking a sweat. There’s no shortage of games on the device either, with titles such as Bladeslinger, Shadowgun, Riptide GP, and the large assortment of games already compatible with the Tegra chips, there’s a little something for everyone. If you’re the type that enjoys relaxing while watching videos and playing games, you’re in luck. The Tegra 3 processor works with 3d monitors and 3d TV’s through HDMI v1.4 thanks to NVIDIA’s 3D Vision Technology, that’s not all though. Kal-El also supports gaming controllers from most major consoles and manufacturers.

The first product containing the chip will be the Asus Transformer Prime which is expected to come out by the end of the year. 2012 appears to be a busy year for NVIDIA and its partners, and I personally look forward to seeing the new Tegra 3 devices announced at this year’s CES. Will Kal-El usher in a new age of super-powered phones, or are consumers content with their phones running just enough to get them by?
