NewNet Communication Technologies, LLC announced November 29, 2011 that they plan to acquire the former Motorola Solutions’ WiMAX business from Nokia Siemens Networks. NewNet would receive the WiMAX product portfolio, including the employees and assets, as well as all active customer and supplier contracts. Approximately 300 Nokia Siemens Networks employees would transfer to NewNet. The companies expect to close the deal before December 31, 2011.

WiMAX is part of the 4G wireless technology that delivers high speed internet. “WiMax far surpasses the 30-metre (100-foot) wireless range of a conventional Wi-Fi local area network (LAN), offering a metropolitan area network with a signal radius of about 50 km (30 miles). The name "WiMAX" was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformity and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL." WiMax offers data-transfer rates of up to 75 Mbit/s, which is superior to conventional cable-modem and DSL connections. However, the bandwidth must be split among multiple users and thus yields lower speeds in practice” (Wikipedia).

NewNet hopes to acquire the Nokia WiMAX network so that they can benefit from the vast amount of companies which have invested in WiMAX infrastructure, “NewNet recognizes there is enormous potential in providing outstanding products, support and services to operators who have already invested heavily in WiMAX technologies as well as those who will do so in the future. We are committed to serving the market with an industry leading roadmap and innovative product migration options” (Nokia Siemens Networks). Nokia is also fully committed to the plan and believes NewNet is fully capable of providing excellent service and will be an excellent opportunity for the WiMAX employees. The 300 employees which are transferring are based in, suburban Chicago, USA and Hangzhou, China.
