The Hare & The Tortoise

September is back to school season all across the land, but that doesn’t mean that that Pre-K kids have to be left out. There is no better time than now to get all of the little ones on the road to becoming great scholars by flexing their reading and writing skills. In this age of technology, reading materials are more accessible than they’ve ever been. All of the app sites have a multitude of books and magazine ready to download with just a few clicks. Some of these include classics. The classic fable Hare & Tortoise is now available through Onefirm Technology Limited for all of our young readers on the iOS and Android platform!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

This version of The Tortoise & The Hare marries vividly colorful illustration with large text, and clear audio. As your child goes from page to page, words being said are highlighted in green so they can follow along. A play/pause feature is also included to allow stopping and playback, useful if you want to give your child directions, have them sound out words or review text. Each page contains roughly one paragraph, giving your child a chance to digest everything presented to them. The point of this version is to not just teach your child how to read, but to pick up African values via traditional tales. The accent on the English voiceover underscores this point.

Verdict

There are a ton of interactive books on the market. This version of The Hare & The Tortoise is pretty solid. We would like to see volume control and navigation controls placed somewhere on the screen so kids can know from the beginning how to play or pause. If they include background music, it will also help increase the value of the app. Otherwise, we enjoyed the colorful detailed illustration and medium paced clear reading. The free version includes most of the book, 99 cents is required for access to the entire read. All in all, if you are trying to build a reading library on your iOS device for your toddler, this interactive book is a good start.
