GiveMeApps Rating: 5 out of 5
Pros:
  • Easy to navigate
  • Tracks trips and average speed in sections of your journey
  • Lets you save trips and export excel files
Cons:
  • A tutorial should exist in the app and not on the web

Ever needed proof that you took a specific route? Do you feel like reminiscing on some of the most difficult journeys you've undertaken over the years? How about recording all of the obstacles that may have been impacted your timely arrival to your destination? Your stock map app can show you how to get to point B, but Trip Tracker GPS takes your typical GPS app functionality many steps further.

Trip Tracker comes in two flavors: All In One (free) and Professional (pro). For this overview, we will focus on the paid version which has every feature unlocked. As the name implies, the main purpose of the app is trip tracking ability. Simply install the app, choose your method of transportation and go. You get several methods of transportation to pick from - walking, running, cycling, train, bus and boat to name a few. Once you select your transportation method, you can prompt the app to start tracking. When tracking commences, the app will via voice give you safety instructions and make you aware your movement is being tracked. For example, if you selected car mode, you will be warned to not use your phone while driving. This is a thoughtful touch.

To really test for accuracy, we used train mode most of the time. Here in New York City, commuter railroads can travel up to 80 MPH with very slow bottlenecks at some points, making this particular mode a nice choice since direction and speeds would be all over the spectrum. Without fail, our trips were tracked with precision. In the screenshot below, you can see the average speed, along with the fastest and slowest speeds over the course of the trip. If have ever taken the Long Island Railroad, these speeds are consistent with the daily commuting experience. We were impressed.

The fun does not stop there. Some other goodies are thrown in. You can for example, turn on geofence markers along your route. You can use the camera to take photos of points of interest along your route and add them to the map. This can be useful say if you are keeping a collection of your trips and want to make a photo collage. You could snap pictures with your camera, and then add pics of the route with mini pics of landmarks observed along the way. You also get rotated maps thanks to an additional compass.

The settings menu lets you customize the experience a bit. You can change the speed of the voice used to announce the start of trips. You can play with the speed and tonality of the voice. As with most GPS apps, you can switch between Satellite, Map and Hybrid view. Here you can also toggle GeoFencing mode. In the Trip History section, you can view all of your saved trips. When ending a trip, the app asks whether you would like to save or discard your tracked route. If you elect to save, you will see the results in your trip history. In addition to just browsing and viewing saved trips, you can also export all old trips as an excel file or email attachment.
