Sprint Telling Customers To Cap It?

The one edge Sprint had over its competitors for a long time was its unlimited data plans. Unlimited Talk & Text, $99.99 (Current), Free Incoming Plus 300 Outgoing minutes (2005). Then there was the best of the best, Unlimited Data (current). I picked up my first Sprint Data Card for my laptop back in 2007 and was amazed at the speed of 3G service anywhere I could take my laptop. More so, I was elated at the fact that I could be online 24 hours a day without issue, all for $59.99/mo (even today an unbelievable deal)! Those days are quickly coming to an end.

Though many customers have left Sprint to link with competitors leaving them in third place, Sprint is now getting ready to place a 5GB cap on its Hotspot Data Plan. While the older plan allowed for true unlimited data transfer, you will now pay fees for every MB you go over the new cap. When presented with this info on the streets of New York City, many customers were less than thrilled. Jacob Hartman, 32, Sprint Customer said, "The one reason I stayed with Sprint was because of its unlimited data plans".

Sarah Gross, 24, Sprint Customer said, "They've always been behind with getting the latest and greatest phones, but I stuck around for their unlimited plans. When my contract is up, I might just jump ship". It should be noted that for years, AT&T for example had a 4GB cap on its data plans (i.e. laptop cards).

The new data caps go into effect on October 22, 2011. Couple this with Termination Fees going up by $150. If you do decide to cut out and jump to another carrier early, you will pay for it. There is always a bright side however. If you have a Master Service Agreement, Corporate ID or a Tablet Mobile Hotspot Plan, your will be unaffected. Sprint is expected to carry the heavily anticipated iPhone5 this fall.
